WEDNESDAY, Oct 24, 2018 @4PM | Wheeler Auditorium, followed by 5:15PM IGS Library Reception
jolly + murphy: One R, one D

U.S. Representatives David Jolly (R) and Patrick Murphy (D) tried to work across the aisle in Congress. They both lost re-election because of it. The two now tell the unvarnished truth about what’s broken in Washington, and how to fix it. (In their lively and irreverent conversation, they say things they probably shouldn’t.)

On Wednesday, October 24th, former Members of Congress Jolly and Murphy will speak at Berkeley at 4 p.m. at Wheeler Auditorium in Alan Ross’s class. You are invited to attend the lecture and a private reception immediately following at 5:15 p.m. at the Institute for Governmental Studies Library (109 Moses). No registration is required for the lecture, but we ask that you help us with a head count by registering for the reception. Can’t make the lecture? Feel free to join us to meet Congressman Murphy and Jolly at the reception.

Political conversations are entirely predictable these days – the feuding sides refuse to engage in meaningful, respectful, hard-fought disagreement, and problem solving – instead lobbing grenades at “the enemy” from far enough away that we can demonize our foe and imply foul intent for ratings (see cable news, 24/7).

That’s what makes our special guests (now real life friends) thoroughly riveting: they are former rivals who defied the trend and actually worked together on issues about which we’re told there’s no possible collaboration – and that we’re intractably divided. You’ll never have an opportunity to get a more intimate inside look at Washington from those in the know.
